How MBT Compares

MBT is not a replacement for traditional transformation advisory, and it is not positioned against it. The two are designed differently and are most useful at different moments. This page sets out those differences, without naming any firm.

Vendor neutralityOfferings commonly span strategy, design and implementation. Many providers disclose alliances and manage independence through their own policies.Sells no software, takes no referral fees and has no interest in which vendor is chosen. "Technology contribution: None or Low" is a valid finding.
Scope of workEnd-to-end: HR strategy, operating-model and organisation design, workforce and talent, technology-enabled transformation, change and delivery.Focused on the stage before transformation: diagnosis, prioritisation and requirements.
How evidence is gatheredInterviews, workshops, benchmarking, data analysis and practitioner experience across many organisations.Public and client-supplied written evidence, with user confirmation of what applies.
How findings are presentedMethod and documentation standards vary by provider and engagement.Every finding carries source attribution, distinguishing verified primary data from working hypotheses.
Causal structureUses each provider's own diagnostic frameworks and expert judgement.A fixed seven-level chain from root cause to business impact.
Organisational context and politicsExperienced people read unspoken dynamics, mediate between stakeholders and build alignment.Cannot see what has not been written down or confirmed.
Change and executionProvides change leadership, coaching, programme management and delivery teams.Does not deliver change. Its output is a blueprint for those who do.

Neither column is a ranking. Quality on either side depends on the evidence available, the people involved and the stage of the transformation.

What MBT's design is built for

Vendor neutrality. MBT has no stake in what happens after the diagnosis, so it can say plainly when the root problem lies in the operating model, governance or leadership mandate rather than in technology.

A visible evidence trail. Findings are labelled by certainty, sources are counted by where they originally came from, and disagreements between internal and public evidence are shown rather than quietly resolved.

Separating causes from symptoms. The seven-level chain helps keep root causes apart from day-to-day symptoms before money is committed.

Where traditional advisory is essential

People, politics and alignment. Interviews, facilitation and experienced judgement surface what no document records.

Leading change. A clear diagnosis does not create buy-in by itself. Change leadership, coaching and communication need people.

Delivery. Multi-year programmes need programme management and delivery teams. MBT does not replace them.

Working alongside traditional models

MBT can engage with traditional industry transformation models, depending on the contractual arrangement agreed with the client:

  • Independent baseline before engagement. Commissioned by HR leadership to establish an evidence-based scope before advisory or delivery partners are appointed.
  • Evidence layer within a programme. Working alongside an appointed advisory partner, under the client's direction, to supply traceable problem trees and root-cause findings into their design and change work.
  • Scoping before vendor selection. Setting out operating-model and functional prerequisites so later tenders are based on confirmed needs.

In every arrangement MBT stays vendor-neutral, works under NDA, and takes direction from the client's HR leadership.

When to use each

  • Use MBT before major decisions, when you need an auditable, vendor-neutral view of what is actually broken and whether technology can realistically help.
  • Use traditional advisory and delivery teams to design, align, lead and deliver the transformation — with or without MBT's findings as an input.

Coverage

Built for how HR actually breaks down.

However you scope it — by focus area, by problem, by scenario, or by geography — MBT's research starts where you already are.

Problems we surfaceHR problems we're built to catch

Structural bottlenecks the research is tuned to isolate across your operating model, core systems and workforce data — each validated against your evidence before any transformation is recommended.

When this gets usedBusiness scenarios

The business moments that usually open a transformation conversation — each researched as a possibility to confirm or reject, never assumed to apply to you.

MarketsGeographies

Research adapts to your exact operating footprint — from a single site to a multi-country enterprise. MBT examines why the same programme behaves differently across jurisdictions: statutory variation, works councils, payroll rules and local talent conditions. 19 market guides are published today, and further guides are being released on a rolling basis. Any other country, region or city can still be entered in Scope, with public-source depth validated per run rather than assumed.
